Birdland Jazz Club, New York City - Wednesday Night jazz: Frank Vignola’s Guitar Night

Birdland Jazz Club, New York City - Wednesday Night jazz: Frank Vignola’s Guitar Night in the Theater + Special Guest Henry Acker "BIRDLAND HISTORY Ever since most of Chicago’s top musicians moved to New York in the mid-to-late 1920s, New York City has been the Jazz Mecca. Nearly every major jazz style of the past seventy years has been initiated in the Big Apple. It was Charlie Parker, familiarly known to his fans and fellow musicians as “Bird,” a contraction of Yardbird, his formal nickname, who was the dynamic creative personality and genius of the alto saxophone who served as the inspiration for Birdland. The Early Days of Jazz in NYC When the original Birdland opened in December of 1949, Charlie Parker was the headliner and the club was located on Broadway, a block west of the 52nd Street scene, which was a hotbed of jazz in the 1930s and 40s. Miraculously, just as the scene on 52nd Street caved in, Birdland was born and quickly came to prominence. For the next fifteen years, the club’s survival formula was built upon memorable double and triple bills, commencing at 9 p.m. and sometimes lasting ’til dawn. In addition to Bird, many jazz legends were regulars at the club. Count Basie and his smokin’ big band made Birdland their New York headquarters, eventually recording George Shearing’s “Lullaby of Birdland” live at the club. John Coltrane’s classic Quartet regularly appeared at the club in the early 1960s, recording “Live at Birdland.” And the famous DJ, Symphony Sid Torin made a name for himself broadcasting live from the club to radio listeners up and down the eastern seaboard. ... Birdland’s booking history reads like a who’s who of jazz: Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bud Powell, Stan Getz, Lester Young, Erroll Garner, and many, many others. Considering the excitement that Birdland generated on a daily basis, it’s no surprise that the club attracted its share of celebrities. Regulars to the nightly festivities included such household names as Gary Cooper, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Joe Louis, Marlene Dietrich, Ava Gardner, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Sugar Ray Robinson. ... But as a new popular music, Rock & Roll emerged, Birdland’s fortunes declined in the 60’s and its doors were closed on Broadway and 52nd in 1965. After many 5 am nights, the club needed to take a nap. ... Now, half a century later, the Birdland banner has been reborn in midtown and called, “close to perfection for serious fans and musicians,” by The New York Times. After a decade of neighborhood success on the Upper West Side, John decided to move the club back to Midtown. The new Birdland offers top-flight jazz in a world class setting, good sight lines and acoustics, elbow room, and an award-winning menu featuring American cuisine with a Cajun flair. Modern Jazz in Manhattan Since the reemergence of the club, midtown Manhattan has been treated to some of the best jazz on the planet, including memorable sets by such musicians as Oscar Peterson, Pat Metheny, Diana Krall, Roy Haynes, Michel Legrand, Dave Brubeck, Pat Martino, Tony Williams, Hank Jones, Michel Petrucciani, Maynard Ferguson, Freddie Hubbard, Marian McPartland, John Pizzarelli, Kurt Elling, Joe Lovano, McCoy Tyner, Michael Brecker, Clark Terry, Ron Carter, Jon Hendricks, George Shearing, James Moody, Yellowjackets, John Scofield, Phoebe Snow, Dave Holland, and Tito Puente, as well as the big bands of Chico O’Farrill, Duke Ellington, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Maria Schneider. In addition, Birdland is home to such popular musical events as the Umbria Jazz Festival in NYC and the Annual Django Reinhardt NY Festival. Over the past two decades, Birdland has expanded it’s musical outreach with the Broadway at Birdland concert series, shining a spotlight on Chita Rivera, Liza Minnelli, Michael Feinstein, Betty Buckley, Christine Ebersole, Barbara Cook, Ariana DeBose, Glenn Close, Melissa Manchester, and thousands more. Jim Caruso’s Cast Party, our weekly impromptu variety show, has helped make Birdland the late-night place to rub shoulders with show folk every Monday since 2004. And the 2018 addition of the state-of-the-art Birdland Theater has made it possible to include Broadway superstars, burlesque, comedy, cabaret divas, jazz legends and the most buzzed-about up-and-comers to our schedule. Since 1949, Birdland has established itself as an essential part of New York City culture and musical history." - https://birdlandjazz.com/history/ "It’s the best jazz guitar lover’s show in the world, celebrating all facets of the guitar in jazz. Frank Vignola’s virtuosity has made him the guitarist of choice for many of the world’s top musicians, including Ringo Starr, Madonna, Donald Fagen, Tommy Emmanuel, the Boston and New York Pops, and more.." - https://birdlandjazz.com/event/frank-vignolas-guitar-night-in-the-theater-6/ #jazz #newyork #jazzclub

The Village Vanguard, New York City: Monday Night Jazz - Vanguard Jazz Orchestra

"It has become, perhaps, the most famous basement in New York City. The small room with low ceilings and remarkable acoustics has staged more than 100 live commercial recordings, several of which are essential works in the history of jazz on record. The Village Vanguard, open since 1935, is the oldest continuously operated jazz club in the world." - https://www.npr.org/2008/08/27/94034531/the-village-vanguard-a-hallowed-basement “There’s no other place on the planet where so many greats played for so many years, and that’s one of those statements that seems like hyperbole, but it’s not,” said Loren Schoenberg, the artistic director of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem. “It’s really the only quote unquote holy place left in jazz—period.” - https://observer.com/2015/02/as-the-village-vanguard-turns-80-it-remains-new-yorks-most-cherished-jazz-club/ "The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra began its life as the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra in 1966.The world-famous Village Vanguard jazz club in New York City booked the newly formed band for three Monday nights that February. Those performances were wildly successful and the engagement was extended indefinitely. The Village Vanguard’s owner, Max Gordon, told Mel Lewis, “We’ll keep it going until it tapers off.” Over half a century and more than 2700 Monday nights later, it still hasn’t. The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra stands apart from all other modern ensembles of its kind and is still as strong and vital as ever." - https://villagevanguard.com/ #jazz #newyork #jazzclub

Planetarium Hamburg SpatialSound Wave - Fraunhofer IDMT "Spatial audio production for immersive fulldome projections - Verband Deutscher Tonmeister e.V. Johannes Ott, Anca-Stefania Tutescu, Niklas Wienböker, Jan Rosenbauer, Thomas Görne - Hamburg University of Applied Sciences Fulldome is an immersive half-spherical video format utilized mainly in planetariums which is often combined with spatial audio playback. This combination on one hand offers new ways of perceiving sound in space and on the other hand helps enhancing fulldome productions with audiovisual synergy. However, audio production for fulldome video poses some technical and artistic challenges. Limited time slots and resources seldom allow to work on sound productions inside a planetarium directly. Likewise, the various spatial audio technologies provide the user with fairly different approaches to create, position and move sounds in space." - https://lnkd.in/dYWZmc_U -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "SpatialSound Wave is an object based system for producing and replaying true-to-life three-dimensional sound. The music, of course, takes centre stage. In the Grand Hall, this assumes a double meaning: the terraced rows of seats rise up high around the stage in a circle. This creates an extraordinary sense of proximity to the musical action, especially since Yasuhisa Toyota’s acoustics make every note ring out as clear as crystal. As you make your way around the building, there are amazing views to discover at every turn. This is because the Elbphilharmonie – designed by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron – was built right in the middle of the river Elbe. A shimmering wave of glass on a solid brick warehouse from the 1960s, and between them a publicly accessible viewing platform that functions as a meeting place and launch pad for discovering the rest of the building: not only the Grand Hall and the Recital Hall, but also the hotel, restaurant and souvenir shop. The special materials used in the interior design invite you to touch and feel them, especially the acoustic wall panelling in the Grand Hall and the Recital Hall. And hands-on experience is also provided in the Elbphilharmonie »World of Instruments« in the Kaistudios, where musical instruments from around the world await to be played and discovered." #elbphilharmonie #hamburg #reeperbahnfestival

Reeperbahn Festival and Conference 2022 - Day 03 Homemade Overview Aftermovie 00:00:18 Excerpt: New Artists: The Future Of Our Future How emerging talent can be nurtured in the current and the coming music economy. How do the first steps of a music career shape up in an increasingly competitive music market, where more and more new (and old) releases are pushing their way in? What are the options offered by DSPs, what are the strategies offered by labels? How do music releases, social media presence and artistic freedom interlock? Speakers Paul Dechert, Senior Artist Relations Manager, Deezer, Jillian Gerngross, Director Europe, Australia and New Zealand, Amazon Music, United Kingdom Anika Mottershaw, A&R and Project Manager, Bella Union, United Kingdom Moderator Joe Sparrow, Journalist, radio moderator, Joe Sparrow, Germany https://www.reeperbahnfestival.com/en/conference/new-artists-the-future-of-our-future 00:01:26 Excerpt: The Future Of Music Distribution Internet has completely reshaped the music business and we’re still only in the early stages of this transformation. Web 3.0 powered technologies and trends such as NFTs & DAOs are the context in which the music industry will develop in the years to come — and having a good idea of these tectonic shifts is instrumental to success in the industry as fast-paced as the music business. Are we once again standing before a paradigm shift last seen during the transition from CDs to Streaming? What is the status quo of Music Distributors and DSPs and how do rights owner prepare for the things to come? Speakers Jan Denecke, CEO and Co-Founder, Twelve x Twelve, Germany Aly Gillani, EU Label & Artist Representative, Bandcamp, Germany Curt Keplin, Head Of Business Development GSA, FUGA, Germany Sascha Lazimbat, COO, Zebralution, Germany Meike Nolte, Director Global Artist Services, Beatport, Germany Marit Posch, General Manager IDOL, IDOL Independent Distribution On Line, Germany Moderator Philipp Grefer, Founder and CEO, WISE | Fake Music Media, Germany https://www.reeperbahnfestival.com/en/conference/the-future-of-music-distribution 00:03:10 Excerpt: Modern Recordings - Dobrawa Czocher at St. Pauli Church Modern Recordings is already a guest at the Reeperbahn Festival for the second time. The Polish cellist Dobrawa Czocher opens the evening and gives a foretaste of the album "Dreamscapes", which will be released in January 2023. https://www.reeperbahnfestival.com/en/conference/modern-recordings 00:05:01 Excerpt: PETROL GIRLS at Gruespan - Presented by: Musikexpress When all of Paris was in flames during the French Revolution, it was the women’s group Pétroleuses whose pyromania shot free with a resolute political impetus. The name fits the Petrol Girls like a glove, as they have been sticking their fingers up at the Status Quo for ten years now. From feminism or anti-capitalism, to a clear positioning against racism, sexual violence or profit-driven climate collapse: the rage-filled guys and girls of the London quartet make no secret of their stance: on the contrary, they openly take a stand. Rare enough these days, especially when it comes to socially uncomfortable discourse. But this was always the spirit forming the heart of hardcore punk and its representatives. So it’s good that the Petrol Girls show no sign of relenting, even after a 2020 re-formation and two years of the pandemic. Instead, album number three, “Baby”, is ready to go and will be served up red hot on the Reeperbahn in September. https://www.reeperbahnfestival.com/en/festival/petrol-girls 00:07:18 Excerpt: KOKOROKO at Mojo Club London’s jazz scene has been exploding in all directions for years now. Young artists and ensembles from the British metropolis have set out to entirely rethink the genre, to implement unconventional ideas and to develop their unique style signatures. Kokoroko stand at the center of this scene with their vibrant blend of afrobeat, jazz, funk and highlife, for which radio hosts and label heads like Gilles Peterson hold nothing but praise. The band's self-titled debut EP has convinced critics and jazz enthusiasts alike with its relaxed summery atmosphere, sublime grooves and the kind of innovative energy that can only come from a new generation of creative minds. Kokoroko number eight in total - eight virtuosos who’ve not only honed their instruments and voices to a masterful level, but who also know how to combine different aspects of the genre exceptionally brilliantly. After years of touring and studio jamming, their debut album "Could We Be More" is finally set to be released in 2022, with which Kokoroko is bound to set a first of many monuments for themselves. https://www.reeperbahnfestival.com/en/festival/kokoroko #rbf22 #reeperbahnfestival #rbfc2022

Inside the Berlin State Opera - Staatsoper Berlin with backstage access.

#berlin #opera #walkingtour Staatsoper Berlin Unter den Linden "For music lovers, there is no going past this institution. The State Opera of Berlin is one of the most renowned opera houses in the world. Located centrally on the boulevard Unter den Linden, this ensemble has been been delighting visitors since its first performance in 1742." - https://lnkd.in/gyxm9RPp " ... The State opera Unter den Linden was built as the first detached court opera building in Europe in 1742. The building was severely damaged several times in history (1842, 1942,1945) and also restored or renovated several times (1788,1910,1928,1986). The in 2009 existing situation was created after the war, in 1955. In the period from 2010 to 2017 the building was fully renovated and all technical equipment renewed. A new rehearsal building was realised with 7 rehearsal halls, including a choir rehearsal hall and an orchestra rehearsal hall. The historic opera hall has 1350 seats and a small hall with a flat floor: the beautiful Apollosaal. This paper concentrates on the acoustical aspects of the renovation of the opera hall. Starting points of the renovation are a substantial improvements of the room acoustic of the hall , at the same time preserving the architectural design and monumental status of the hall. Since the acoustic of the hall results from the geometry and the architecture, this is a contradiction in requirements." - Martijn Vercammen, Margriet Lautenbach, Peutz Netherlands https://lnkd.in/gH2rYZZh " ...
