"Art Courtyard Passage
The Kunsthof Passage (Art Courtyard Passage) that links Alaunstrasse 70 with Görlitzer Strasse 21-25 is the site of creative, colorful and diverse activity. Five courtyards are designed according to specific themes, and they house numerous restaurants and cafés, galleries and shops. Today no one remembers whether the impetus came from the challenge of revitalizing run-down backyards, or as part of a concept to combine living, work and leisure spaces.
The Kunsthof Passage (Art Courtyard Passage) passageway is a place for all kinds of discoveries – for instance, in the Mythical Creatures courtyard – and invites you to interpret the detailed façade designs. In the Metamorphosis courtyard, for instance, observant visitors can see the slow transformation of 24 pieces of paper. In the Elements courtyard, on the other hand, the colorful architectural details on the walls – various downpipes – turn into musical instruments when it rains." - https://www.dresden.de/en/tourism/attractions/sights/neustadt_district/art-courtyard-passage.php
"More than 20 years ago, the idea of revitalizing run-down courtyards in Dresden's Neustadt district was born. With the art courtyards between Alaunstrasse 70 and Görlitzer Str. 25, a showcase project took shape. The aim of harmonizing living, working and life is reflected in this. Each courtyard takes up its own theme and shows this in its facade design. Visit the Courtyard of the Elements, the Courtyard of Light, the Courtyard of Animals, the Courtyard of Mythical Creatures and the Courtyard of Metamorphoses. We invite you to take a virtual tour here in advance." - https://kunsthof-dresden.de/
"The Kunsthofpassage in Dresden's Neustadt
The Kunsthofpassage in Dresden is colorful, creative and full of contrasts. The five different courtyards cover different themes and invite you to linger in cafes, shops and galleries.
The passage connects Alaunstraße 70 with Görlitzer Straße 23-25. How the Kunsthofpassage came into being is not entirely clear. But one thing is certain: the once run-down backyards have been brought back to life. Now they cleverly combine life, living, working and celebrating. The Dresden architects MüllerMüller, Knerer & Lang, Heike Böttcher and Meyer Bassin are responsible for the implementation. Artists such as Viola Schöpe, Annette Paul- André Tempel- Christoph Roßner, Arendt Zwicker and the stone sculptors Sandner and Matz were also asked for the 2001 project. They primarily redesigned the external facades of the backyards.
The five courtyards
Each courtyard has its own name and an individual theme. We will introduce you to the special features of the complexes.
The Animal Courtyard
Giraffe, monkey, crane and co.: Everything is green in the Animal Courtyard. The animal reliefs extend over the entire wall of the house. A whole herd of monkeys jumps from wall to wall over the head of a giant giraffe.
Courtyard of Mythical Creatures
This complex reflects the flow of life. Togetherness, cosmic elements and mythical creatures are the main elements of the artistic design. The artist Viola Schöpe designed 900 m² of wall space with ornamental tiles.
Courtyard of Light
Metal mirrors wherever you look - in the Courtyard of Light, a variety of colors are reflected depending on the position of the sun. There are also two walkway stages and various projection surfaces. These are used for multi-media performances and action theater, among other things.
Courtyard of the Elements
The artists Annette Paul, Christoph Roßner and André Tempel have primarily put water and light in the spotlight in the Courtyard of the Elements. Blue and yellow facades with aluminum sheets are evidence of the creative work. Water pours through the gutters via numerous rain pipes and is collected in a water basin - a spectacle for the senses.
Courtyard of Metamorphoses
Together with the Karlheinz metal workshop, the artist Arend Zwicker has attached two 15-meter-high steles to the building's facade. The surface contains fiber optic bundles that are illuminated in the evening. In addition, 24 different papers hang in metal frames that constantly change over time.
Shopping in the Kunsthofpassage
In addition to the indescribable architecture, the passage is also an ideal place to shop. A romantic labyrinth of passageways and small courtyards is ideal for strolling. The “most beautiful milk shop in the world” is very popular, for example, or the former factory shop of the “Pfundsche Molkerei” at Bautzner Straße 79.
