"VCA (Video Corporation of America) is a global technology integrator. VCA was selected to install a variety of AV products into the large remodeled meeting space of the United Nations.  This room is extremely vital to operations due to its deliberative, policymaking and representative nature. Heads of state routinely meet in this space, countless news outlets broadcast these meetings around the world.

Because of the historical nature of the room, the remodel was done to preserve the original look of the space. To the naked eye it appears almost identical to how it looked prior to the renovation. The layout of the room includes approximately 500 delegate microphone seats, and an additional 1500 listen-only seats. The project required the integrated systems to support the organization’s campus wide systems; and also provide feeds to major news outlets. This was accomplished via leveraging both broadcast and professional audio-video technology solutions to work as one.

The United Nations audio systems contain products from QSC Q-sys, Yamaha Corporation CL-series used for mixing, processing and video conferencing, TAIDEN HCS 8300-series for Congress Microphone and Simultaneous Interpretation, Renkus-Heinz, Inc. ICII-R steerable arrays and Bag End subwoofers for room sound re-enforcement. The PureLink PM-series routers provided transport and stereo audio feeds into QSC. QSC and Taiden are redundantly linked via analog and AES audio while QSC and Yamaha are digitally linked directly via a 64×64 Dante™ audio transport bridge. The continuous, low-volume sound enables people to hear a clear direct sound in every position of the venue, and it is not easy to produce a howling sound. When using headphones to listen to the simultaneous interpretation, the original sound will not affect the simultaneous interpretation voice, and it will be difficult to hear.

"Fundado em 1961, o Edifício Arcângelo Maletta é conhecido como centro de boemia e discussão política há mais de 50 anos. Situado bem no cruzamento entre a rua da Bahia e a avenida Augusto de Lima o prédio é testemunha de momentos marcantes da sociedade mineira. Com 19 andares na área comercial e 31 no espaço residencial, o Maletta tem 319 apartamentos, 642 salas, 72 lojas e 74 sobrelojas. A área residencial do conjunto tem cerca de 1.300 moradores e abriga estudantes organizados em repúblicas, famílias com crianças e idosos. Além do movimento dos moradores, os corredores do Edifício Maletta fervilham durante a noite com o movimento de jovens que frequentam os bares do edifício. O conjunto também recebe diariamente mais de 5 mil frequentadores, que buscam serviços de advocacia, costureira, relojoeiro… Lá também sempre tem gente procurando comprar discos usados em sebos ou roupas em brechó. A construção do Maletta ficou conhecida por ser o lar da primeira escada rolante de BH. Em conversa com o BHAZ, o historiador e professor da UFMG (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais), Liszt Vianna, conta que, para além da inovação, o prédio tem valor sociocultural. “O espaço é mais notabilizado pela ocupação dele, pela integração com a cidade e com os eventos políticos e sociais que aconteceram por lá”. O professor relembra que as paredes do Maletta já foram cenário de resistência contra a ditadura que se instaurou no Brasil em 1964. Desde então, o prédio foi palco de manifestações políticas e ponto de encontro de todo o tipo de gente que procurava lazer na capital mineira. Para compreender melhor como o Maletta chegou até aqui, é necessário voltar algumas décadas no tempo. Mais especificamente no ano de 1918, quando o italiano Arcângelo Maletta comprou por 300 contos de réis o Grande Hotel e iniciou suas atividades em Belo Horizonte. O hotel funcionava na rua da Bahia, 1.136, esquina com avenida Paraopeba, atual avenida Augusto de Lima, e, por lá, passaram importantes figuras da cultura mineira, como o escritor Carlos Drummond de Andrade e o modernista Emílio Moura. Arcângelo Maletta nasceu na região da Calábria, na Itália, em 18 de novembro de 1875, filho de Vicente e Theresa Maletta. Ele chegou ao Brasil aos 14 anos, com outros imigrantes, para trabalhar na cultura do café, em São Paulo, e naturalizou-se brasileiro com o tempo. Mudou-se para a cidade de Queluz de Minas, região que originou 23 cidades mineiras, onde trabalhou em um hotel e adquiriu conhecimentos do setor. Maletta administrou o Grande Hotel até 1953, ano de sua morte. Depois, o prédio foi vendido à Cia de Empreendimentos Gerais, que o demoliu em 1957 e iniciou a construção do Conjunto Arcângelo Maletta, em homenagem ao último dono do hotel. BH Boêmia Na busca de entender mais sobre a vida que circula no Edifício Maletta, o BHAZ conversou com o síndico do conjunto e ator Amauri Reis, 62. É com um sorriso no rosto e paixão nos olhos que ele fala sobre os primeiros dias em que visitou o Maletta. Sentado em seu escritório, que tem até uma miniatura do edifício disposta em uma das mesas, ele relembra o início de sua carreira, que se entrelaça com a história do prédio em que trabalha até hoje. “Eu começo a me apaixonar pelo Maletta em 1979. E eu achava uma loucura isso daqui. Em 79, eu resolvi fazer teatro e as pessoas frequentavam o Maletta. A gente saía da aula e vinha pra cá, porque era um centro de referência da cultura. A Cantina do Lucas era o bar onde todos os grandes artistas vinham depois do espetáculo. Então, a gente vinha para ver os grandes artistas”. Desde a edificação, os bares do conjunto se integraram à vida cultural da cidade. A Cantina do Lucas, por exemplo, aberta desde 1962, foi frequentada por escritores e músicos como Murilo Rubião, Nivaldo Ornelas, Wagner Tiso e Milton Nascimento.
